Stay For The Community!

November 11, 2019 by Ryan Miller

Come for the brew and theology; stay for the community!

This is my new saying because it’s the truth. I love a good brew, and if there’s a quality theological conversation while sipping on said brew, life is golden! Still, I can have an excellent IPA and nerd out on some robust theology, but if there’s no genuine community in the midst, I’m out after a couple of beers!

In nearly 5 years of doing and building this ever-evolving pub gig in the city of Denver and seeing it expand across the country, I’ve come to some pretty simple realizations.

  • First, people love to gather. Period.

  • Second, communities value authenticity.

  • Third, gathered tribes that are being real desire affirmation in the core of their humanity.

In summation, humans dig the connection that takes place when communities don’t bullshit, and are valued regardless of their ideas or beliefs.

When the following aren’t being met, we either pretend and repress what we really believe (out of fear of being kicked out of a certain tribe if it doesn’t match up with a particular tribe) and/or we double down and tow the party line with branded allegiance. The former is not healthy as the repression will poorly manifest in other ways, and the latter creates an (unhealthy) echo chamber of uniformity.

Here’s what I love about Brew Theology.

We love digging into nerdy theological, philosophical, political, socio-economic and spiritual discussions on everything under the sun while sipping on the nectar of the gods. It’s a flight of brew, indeed, and the topics are all out there for good brewin’… And when we do this difficult yet needed task on a weekly basis, everyone has a voice around all of the tables. There’s no top-down creedal agreement; our oneness is created in our eclectic differences.

So, if you want to taste and see that this authentic communal expression is very good, I encourage you to look around your community and see who can help be a part of a movement of love, acceptance and grace in midst of our chaotic, ever-increasing polarized world. Do your world a favor.
Grab a pint.
Tackle theology.
And stick around for some badass community!

Peace,

Ryan
